Barker/Roy-Hart earns first football win of season

HS Roundup: Albion volleyball clinches N-O crown

WILSON — Senior Jake Haight did everything but keep the fog away Friday night, sparking visiting Barker/Roy-Hart to a 44-26 victory over Wilson in a Section VI football contest between two small-school winless teams.

With the win on Wilson’s Homecoming, head coach Bill Bruning’s Barker/Roy-Hart team improved to 1-5 overall this season and remain 0-5 in Class B North. Head coach Bill Atlas’ Lakemen dropped to 0-6 overall and remain 0-5 in Class C North.

Haight was magnificent on offense, defense and special teams, finishing with 203 yards and three touchdowns on 17 rushes, as well as 136 yards and two touchdowns receiving, four extra points kicking, a two-point conversion run, an on-sides recovery and a partridge in a pear tree.

Bouncing back from injury, Haight’s return was immediately felt. The 6-foot, 3-inch 200 pound senior — widely considered among the top overall high school athletes in all of Western New York — opened the scoring just three-and-a-half minutes in the game, scampering around the outside 40 yards for a touchdown. His extra point point gave the visitors a 7-0 lead.

Haight opened the second quarter with a three-yard TD run, then added a two-point conversion run to make it 15-0.

Moments later, Barker/Roy-Hart sophomore quarterback Andy Xapsos (4 for 5 passing, 172 yards, 2 TDs) tossed a 39-yard TD pass to Haight, who added the PAT to up the lead to 22-0.
The Lakemen wouldn’t quit just yet and cut the lead to 29-7 at halftime with a late razzle-dazzle TD pass-pitch play. Senior QB Tim Walch hit junior Hunter Howland with a pass. Howland promptly pitched the ball to senior Andrew Koroschetz, who sprinted the rest of the way to the endzone. Walch’s PAT rounded out the first-half scoring.

Three straight Barker/Roy-Hart fumbles to open the second half kept Wilson in it. Walch snuck in from a yard out to make it 29-14, but Wilson’s next drive in R-H territory was foiled by a fourth-down interception and third quarter with no further scoring.
