Postseason accolades aplenty for Mustangs

HS BOYS SOCCER: Medina's Scott Barber earns 3rd-team All-WNY

MEDINA —

The Medina boys soccer team excelled on the field this year, performing well throughout the regular season and making a heroic run to the Class B-1 championship game, where the Mustangs defeated Newfane in double overtime on a corner kick by senior Brennen O'Connor.

A great season, to be sure. Now, the Mustangs are continuing to enjoy the fruits of their success, with a number of players receiving substantial postseason recognition. The accolades begin with senior defender Scott Barber, who was named to the All-Western New York third team. Barber anchored the back line for a Medina team that went 8-2-2 in Niagara-Orleans League play, and 13-5-2 overall.

Barber was also named the N-O defensive player of the year, and was named the Mustangs' defensive MVP. Barber joined junior forward Steven Anderson, junior forward James Ianni and senior midfielder Anthony Pane in being named to the all-N-O first-team, while Barber and Barry Rogenmoser were designated Section VI Senior All-Stars, playing in the sectional all-star game held at Orchard Park earlier this month.

Rogenmoser also earned all-N-O second team honors, while senior midfielder Ben Howell, senior defender Hayden Allis and senior defender Evan Milleville all received league honorable mention.

Ianni and Anderson shared team offensive MVP honors, while Rogenmoser received the Coach's Award and senior midfielder Cedric Griffith was named most improved.

The Mustangs were ranked in the local small school polls all season and finished as the No. 2 small school, behind Akron — who defeated Medina in the Class B championship game earlier this month. Medina's 13 wins tie the 2010 team for most in program history, and the team set a school record for shutouts (eight), while tying the 1992 team for most goals scored in a season with 54.

Pane set a school record for most games played and started in a career with 75, as well as most sectional games played and started, with 12. He also set a record for most career wins (41), while Ianni set a record for most assists in a season with 16. Senior goalkeeper Adam Hoot set an individual record for most shutouts in a season (eight), in addition to earning the career shutouts record with 13.
