The Journal-Register

At approximately 12:10 p.m. Sunday the body of a 15-year-old male was recovered from Glenwood Lake in Medina. Pending notification of the family, the boys name was not released by officials Sunday evening.

Medina Fire Captain Michael Maak said the teen had been fishing in the lake and then went into the water to swim.

“He was fishing with his brother and cousin and apparently went into the lake swimming,” Maak said. “He went under about half way.”

According to Maak, the boy tried swimming across the lake, which is approximately 120 feet, and went under about 75 feet in.

Medina Fire Public Information Officer and fire fighter Jeff Elsenheimer said friends and family looked for the teen when he did not resurface prior to calling for help.

The Orleans County Dive Team was also at the scene. Diver Jim Halstead said he was unable to make it to the lake before the teen’s body was recovered, but the response from the Medina Fire Department was very quick and “everything that could possibly be done they did.”

Maak said the boy’s body was recovered about 20 minutes after the emergency call came in.

Glenwood Lake rests on the border of the Village of Medina and the Town of Ridgeway. Fire departments from Medina, Shelby, Ridgeway and Lyndonville responded to the scene along with the county dive team.
